Key findings

  1. Weather explains less than half the surprise

    Adjusting for degree-days removes a meaningful share of the demand surprise but leaves a persistent residual across all three years.

  2. Data-centre load is small but compounding fast

    The absolute contribution remains modest today. The growth rate is what makes it relevant to a five-year capacity plan.

  3. Industrial load is the underrated component

    Growth in industrial consumption tracks the capex cycle discussed in our industrials work, which links two coverage areas that are usually modelled separately.

Decomposition method

We regress peak demand against degree-days to isolate the weather component, then attribute the residual across disclosed data-centre connections and industrial consumption growth.

The attribution is imperfect at the margin and we state the error bands rather than presenting a point estimate as fact.

Implications for capacity planning

If the residual is structural, the reserve margin trajectory implied by current capacity addition plans is tighter than the headline numbers suggest, particularly at peak.

That has direct consequences for merchant power realisation, which we model explicitly in the attached workbook.

What would change the read

A cool summer with demand still above trend would strengthen the structural case considerably. A cool summer with demand reverting to trend would substantially weaken it.

We will publish the updated decomposition after the next peak season regardless of which way it resolves.
